Prahlad P. Chhabria
Who could imagine that a virtually unnoticeable 12 year old janitor from Karachi would rise to become one of India’s multi-millionaires.
Prahlad Chhabria is the founder and current chairman of Finolex Group, India’s leading manufacturer of cables and PVC resin.
After working in a small shop, he later worked as door to door seller of electrical supplies. Probably, still unknown to him at the time, these products was his way for him to earn over US$800 million.
When his father died, the young Prahlad had to help his widowed mother and nine siblings by working in a cloth store and as a bill collector in Amritsar, so he had to stop going to school.
But his strong will and positive outlook enabled him to read and write all by himself.
Together with his younger brother, Prahlad taught himself Engineering basics in Pune. There both of them sold electrical supplies, and later set up their own retail shop.
But making their own products catapulted them to the next level. Soon they supplied to the government including the army.
Chhabria released his own autobiography “No Such Thing As a Self-Made Man” last March 2010.
“Poverty, luck and lack of contacts are merely constraints people carry in their minds. If you start with a positive attitude, half the job is done.“- Prahlad P. Chhabria
